About Wakefield
Wakefield is a small town (of about 2,700 people) in the Outaouais region of Quebec. Located approximately 35km from downtown Ottawa, Wakefield is about a 30 minute drive:
1. Take King Edward Avenue or Sussex Drive to the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge
2. Merge onto Autoroute 5 N and take exit 28
3. Follow Chem. de la Vall. de Wakefield to Chem. Riverside
Outdoor Activities
Looking for an outdoor adventure? There’s so much to do, no matter what season!
- Captiva Farms Horseback Riding: Enjoy 450 acres of horseback trail riding (all year round) in the wondrous Gatineau Hills.
- Éco-Odyssée: A 6km water maze where you learn about local ecology while enjoying a canoe, kayak, paddleboard, or pedal boat ride. During the winter, you can even go on a daytime or nighttime skate and snowshoe across 1.5km of trails.
- Expéditions Wakefield: The local adventure centre where you can buy or rent bicycles, stand up paddleboards, canoes, kayaks, snowshoes, fat bikes, and cross-country skis.
- Gatineau Park: Hundreds of kilometres of hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and bike trails, as well as countless paddling destinations.
- Golf Edelweiss: Connect with nature while enjoying the 18-hole, par 72 golf course in the scenic Edelweiss Valley.
- Fairbairn House & Hendrick Park: Starting from the parking lot, there are two nature trails. The first is a short, creek-side walk and the second is a longer trail that runs along the Gatineau River.
- Ski Vorlage: This local ski hill consists of 18 runs (13 with night skiing) and is open for mountain biking during the warmer months.
- Sommet Edelweiss: This local ski hill offers 20 trails for all types of skiers and snowboarders, a snowpark, and snow tubing area.
Local History
Take in the local history by exploring some of these notable destinations.
- Covered Pedestrian Bridge: Dating back to 1915 (and restored after a fire in 1984), the red covered bridge crosses the Gatineau River and is open to pedestrians and cyclists.
- Fairbairn House & Hendrick Park: Originally built in 1838, this is one of the oldest buildings in Wakefield and now serves as a charming local heritage centre.
- MacLaren Cemetery: A small peaceful cemetery in the hills bordering the Gatineau River that acts as the resting place for the area’s Scottish settlers and Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson.
- Wakefield Mill: Built in 1838, the mill is surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of MacLaren Falls. It now serves as the home of Moulin Wakefield Mill (a well-known hotel, spa, and restaurant destination).
